April Rules Message

Spring is here and so are April showers! This often means you will encounter wet areas on the fairways, even if the Maintenance Supervisor has allowed carts off path. Be aware of conditions as you maneuver your cart across fairways and try to avoid those areas that are especially vulnerable. Why, you might wonder, is the Rules Committee talking about course conditions? If you missed the Rules Workshop, then you may not be aware that USGA Rules of Golf include an entire section on Etiquette, and care of the golf course is part of good etiquette. It is our responsibility as golfers to respect the golf course; and as property owners in Bella Vista, these are OUR courses – let’s protect them as we would our own front yards.

Again, we are not giving you a particular Rule to learn this month. Instead, this will be a little information on several subjects to help you find the answers to your own questions. The first item is the USGA Rules of Golf books are available to you, free of charge, if you do not already have one. The most recent issue was published in 2012 and is current until 2015. If you do not have one of these, please contact me (Stevie Lamar) at stevie46@cox.net or 876-5844. I will have books with me every Thursday – just track me down and let me know if you need one.

Secondly, did you know that our web site has a link to USGA videos (click USGA in the right hand navigation sidebar "Links") that explain Rules? It is very easy to get to, and the videos are great! Thanks to Sandy Trigg and Sue Jacobson for the great work they do for all of us on our WGC web site!

Finally, we have some highly qualified Golf teachers and Golf Pros here in Bella Vista and we have invited some of them to present short clinics to BVWGC prior to our tee off on Thursday mornings. Tomorrow, April 11th, Mike Singletary will share some of his excellent tips on the “short game”. You do not want to miss this – it’s a free 10 minute lesson and Mike has been an enormous help to many of us over the last 15 years. Mike is a Class “A” PGA Pro – highly respected and experienced as a teaching Pro. So gather round the practice green at Dogwood tomorrow at 8:45 am – you will be glad you did. Later on this month, Mike Dryer will give us another clinic at the Scotsdale course; in May, Darryl Muldoon will share some tips at the Country Club. I look forward to seeing you there.

Your Rules Committee is always happy to help you find the answers to your Rules questions, so please let us know how we can help.
